It may be considered the New World, but the North American continent is home to some of the oldest and most strange mysteries in the world. For thousands of years, this continent was inhabited by cultures that either left behind no written records of their history or whose languages are just now being deciphered. As a result, there is much speculation and conjecture about many sites and happenings in North America.
Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave
Within the tropical forests of Belize is a Mayan archaeological site that has become famous not only for its cave formations and wildlife but for the artifacts found within. Locals call this cave Xibalba, which is ancient Mayan for “place of fear” and the name of an ancient god of the underworld. Officially, the name of this cave is Actun Tunichil Muknal, meaning Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre. The cave is also home to perhaps the most famous skeleton in Belize.
