Named for America’s first president, Washington state believed to be the first populated area of the country with human remains dating back to 13,000 years ago found here. Native tribes flourished in the area for centuries before Spaniard Juan Perez made the first European landfall around 1774. Explored by Spain and Britain, America and Great Britain fought over who owned the territory until 1846 and Washington became part of the Oregon territory. Statehood came in 1889.

A Moorish-style theater is known for its stunning interior and three ghosts. Hikers visiting the ruins of a former mental hospital have reported strange encounters. An Irish pub located in a former funeral home has spirits not served at the bar.
